For this episode of T.O.G.R. Luke is going over some terminology in regards to Backpacking weight and the corresponding categories.
…
* A lightweight backpacker (LW) carries a base weight under 20 pounds.
* An ultralight backpacker (UL) carries a base weight under 10 pounds.
* A superultralight backpacker (SUL) carries a base weight under 5 pounds.
There are other sub categories which you may rarely hear of such as Mountain Superultralight and that cat is for mountain trips which require stronger/warmer materials in more extreme conditions.
Base weight refers to the weight of the pack with the essential gear; not of food and water (consumables).
Total Pack Weight refers to the weight of the pack with all of the water and food which you need for your trip
My advice when it comes to going lightweight is this;
reducing weight is very important because of the benefits. However, I couldn’t care less if my base weight falls into certain category.
I would not be able to tell you if the pack I am carrying weighs 9lb or 12lb but I would be able to tell if my pack was weighing 20lbs or 30lbs!
In the future I will have a video discussing what is known as the lightweight dilemma which focuses on the pros and cons of going lightweight.
For me backpacking has other goals, and there are other factors which influence my gear choices, and consequently my base weight.
When going into the Superultralight category these type of backpackers tend to be minimalist which I won’t suggest for everyone. Minimalist backpackers should have a very high degree of experience and skills to substitute the gear that others typically care.
