Hueston Woods is a beautiful state park located in southwestern Ohio, just five miles from Oxford and Miami University. The park is a hidden gem, and includes a large, man-made lake as well as one of the only original stands of virgin forest left in Ohio. The area also sits on top of dolomite limestone and was once a shallow sea, so fossil hunting is a huge activity here. In fact, people come from all over the world to collect the Brachiopod, Bryozoan, Horn Coral, and Trilobite fossils. The American Discovery Trail cuts through the park, and there are over twelve miles of path to explore. The park also has one of the largest and most prominent state park lodges in Ohio, and we are hoping to get back there in the fall for a lodge stay when the kids are on fall break.
We had a great time tent camping, enjoying s’mores over the campfire, visiting the beach at Acton Lake, and just exploring the area. Oh, and the fireworks were fun, too. I think my wife even had a good time!
