Inexpensive Hot Tent Setup for Winter Camping

CAMPING TENT SET UP
My buddy and I wanted to try some winter camping without spending $$$ on a Snowtrekker canvas tent, Titanium stove etc etc. This is what we came up with. Clam Twin Hub II bought on sale at Canadian Tire for $99. Velcro sewed in parallel with the zipper allows a triangular vestibule section with a stove jack to be added to the ice hut. Adds approx 10 square feet of space and keeps the stove out of way. Used telescoping crappie fishing poles to support the vestibule so it stays taut – you don’t want your stovepipe rattling around in a strong wind. This all fits in the Clam II carry bag which can be used without the vestibule for ice fishing.

The stove is a DIY “ammo can” stove which is well documented in other YouTube videos. It keeps the ice hut very warm but you will probably need a reflector behind the stove to keep the hut material from getting too hot. We used a couple of cheap plastic tarps as a floor – a bit of insulation and it really keeps the condensation down.

Ice hut – $99. Vestibule materials ~ $20. DIY ammo can stove ~ $60 in parts.
