Welcome back to Diddly Squat Outdoor Gear & Adventure! In this exciting episode, I’ll be sharing my second solo camping trip in Japan. Join me as I explore the beauty of nature and bring my furry companion along for the journey.

During this trip, I had the pleasure of camping near a picturesque river, where my dog had a blast playing in the water. We set up camp using the reliable Coleman stainless steel fireplace and BBQ, which proved to be incredibly helpful in dealing with the strong winds. You’ll be amazed to see how easy it is to start a fire using a ferro rod and fat wood, even in gusty conditions reaching speeds of 40 miles per hour and beyond. Having my trusty buddy by my side made the experience even more enjoyable.

While the wind kept pesky mosquitoes at bay, it couldn’t deter the sand fleas. One unfortunate incident occurred when I let my dog out at 3 am and got attacked and bitten around 40 times. So, if you plan to camp on a sandy beach, it’s crucial to keep your tent door closed throughout the night to avoid encounters with these tiny, biting critters. I learned this lesson the hard way, as the bites took over a month to heal, with a couple of them still in the process of healing.

Camping along riversides in Japan requires special consideration due to the unpredictable rise of water levels. It’s essential to stay vigilant about the weather conditions, as rivers here can rise rapidly within minutes. Always consult local authorities to ensure your chosen camping spot is safe and permissible. Making a quick call to the local police to inquire about any laws or regulations can save you a lot of trouble later on.

Fortunately, the river where I camped had no restrictions, allowing me to enjoy camping freely in any desired location. The best part is that it’s a free spot where you can pitch your tent and indulge in activities like fishing, swimming, and even embarking on a riverside hike along a well-maintained path. The breathtaking views along the way will leave you in awe. However, if you prefer dense forest areas, this particular spot may not be the best match for your preferences.
